A clear night at Sudelfeld

Night Saturday/Sunday, January 29/30, 2011

With Christian and Ralph, using three Dobsons: 12-inch (Christian), 8-inch (Ralph) and my 16-inch.

Observing from 17:30 to about 0:30

Initially the sky was disturbed by snow groomers from the near skiing area, and that made it very clear that my new 16-inch needed an additional
baffle - which we later set up in Ralph's workshop. But later the groomers were turned off, and it got increasingly dark. The ~ 13 mag supernova
in NGC 2655 was observed with all three telescopes. Lots of highlights like Saturn, M42, M31, M33, M35 plus NGC 2158, M37, h+Chi or NGC 891.
In Christian's 12-inch we observed e.g. a distinct Horsehead, M76, M106, M51 and NGC 3877. In the 16-inch I showed e.g. M46 with NGC 2438,
NGC 2359 ("Thor's Helmet"), NGC 2261, NGC 1999 (Reflexion nebula with dark "keyhole"), the very rich open cluster NGC 2506, the NGC 1275
group or the interacting galaxy NGC 3690.

Ralph made a series of beautiful night images:
